Arrieta tosses 6 scoreless in Phillies' 5-0 win over Braves

Arrieta tosses 6 scoreless in Phillies' 5-0 win over Braves

PHILADELPHIA — Jake Arrieta pitched like the healthy ace the Phillies needed for three years. He could help Philadelphia make some noise in the National League playoff push — to the delight of a cluster of fans with horns, drums and chants from outside the park that produced a needed summer soundtrack.

Arrieta tossed six shutout innings for his first win in more than a year and Jay Bruce and J.T. Realmuto each homered to lead the Phillies past the Atlanta Braves 5-0 Saturday night.

Arrieta (1-1) tossed three-hit ball and struck out six for his first win since June 30, 2019. He made seven more starts before he was shut down with season-ending surgery on a bone spur in his pitching elbow.

“Now I have the ability to throw my breaking balls with more effect,” Arrieta said. “Everything is coming out of my hand a little more crisp.”

Arrieta, who won the 2015 NL Cy Young Award with the Cubs, was sharp in shutting down the Braves and looked like the ace the Phillies expected when he joined them in 2018.

“I have more weapons at my disposal that I didn’t necessarily have the last year or two,” Arrieta said. “I’m not worried about the elbow flaring up in the third or fourth inning.”

He had help all around — right fielder Bryce Harper made an outstretched, diving catch in the fifth that earned a fist pump in appreciation from Arrieta.

Realmuto continued his hot streak, homering for the third straight game, with a 427-foot solo shot in the fourth off Braves starter Kyle Wright (0-2). Wright put the next runners on base and Bruce hit a three-run homer to make it 4-0.

Realmuto’s contract expires at the end of the season and, while he hasn’t said much publicly during the season about his desire for a new deal, he might be making more noise than anyone in baseball at the plate. His homer set off the ringing of the Liberty Bell above the outfield bleachers, blasts from air horns and chants of “Sign J.T.!” from a dozen or so fans pressed against a fence outside the stadium.

“That’s J.T., man. He’s out there with a vengeance,” Harper said.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone complained about the air horn during a series this week to no avail — the dozen or so fans who call themselves the Phandemic Krew are outside Citizens Bank Park, giving the umpires no recourse to make the noise stop.

The four-run fourth was enough to give Arrieta the win in his first start without allowing a run since Aug. 6, 2018.

“I thought he threw the ball well tonight. I thought he didn’t get it over the middle of the plate too often, and when he did, he’s got so much movement on his ball, it’s kind of tough to square him at times,” Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson said.

Jose Alvarez, Tommy Hunter and Deolis Guerra combined on three scoreless innings to help the Phillies complete their first shutout at home since April 26, 2019. Didi Gregorius added an RBI single in the eighth.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said prized prospect Spencer Howard is set to make his big league debut on Sunday, a potential big shot in the arm for the Phillies down the stretch. The 24-year-old Howard, a second-round pick in the 2017 draft, is widely considered the Phillies’ top pitching prospect since Aaron Nola or even Cole Hamels.

Howard impressed Harper, who said on a Twitch steam in July, “If Spencer Howard isn’t starting in our rotation by Game 6 in New York against the New York Yankees, there’s a problem. That’s all I’ll say.”

Howard’s bid to crack the rotation was derailed by service issues. The Phillies kept him on their taxi squad in Allentown, Pennsylvania, for enough days to delay his potential free-agency until after the 2026 season.

“I’m excited for him,” Harper said. “This is where it starts. I’m excited to get him up here. Phillies fans of this organization should be very excited at what Spence does.”

The Phillies were scheduled to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the 1980 World Series champions. The Phillies made cardboard cutouts of the players — including Pete Rose — and stuck them in the right field seats.

Girardi said RHP Vince Velasquez (0-0, 12.00 ERA) will likely start the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Atlanta RHP Huascar Ynoa makes his first start of the season in the first game. The Braves send LHP Max Fried (2-0, 2.04) to the mound in the second.

According to her official website, Cassandra “Cat” Sotos is an artist, songwriter and international-touring violinist, known primarily for her live and studio work in country, rock and pop.

Today, however, she performed for an entirely new audience.  When Sotos boarded a Southwest Airlines flight, she was carrying a fiddle with her.  A flight attendant for Southwest had a guitar on the plane and asked her if she wanted to perform a song together.

Sotos excitedly said that she would perform for the passengers and the song they chose to sing was none other than West Virginia’s favorite song, “Country Roads.”

Sotos was later quoted as saying, “Especially after not being able to play live music for what feels like a million years, it was a wonderful reminder that music makes people so happy for so many reasons.”

Check out the outstanding, impromptu rendition of “Country Roads” below:

Danger Lurks for These 3 High-Yield Dividend Stocks

DK Chart

In an environment of ultra-low interest rates, dividend stocks have become a refuge for investors wanting to generate income. While many dividend stocks remain safe, COVID-19 has hit some hard. Companies such as BPFord, and Macy’s had to reduce or suspend their dividend payouts amid harsh economic conditions.

Many companies, particularly in the energy industry, continue to forgo dividend cuts for now. Nevertheless, investors need to remain wary of large payouts, especially in the cases of Delek US Holdings (NYSE:DK), ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM), and ONEOK (NYSE:OKE).

Many investors may not know the name Delek, which has operated since 2001 in refining and other energy-related industries. Refining is one of the less-affected sectors in the industry when oil prices fall. However, this downturn brought an unprecedented drop in demand.

The second-quarter earnings report showed the extent of the effects. The Brentwood, Tennessee-based energy company reported an adjusted loss of $110.5 million, or $1.50 per share, as demand for refined products has plunged amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Delek stock lost 13% of its value following the announcement. It has also fallen by more than 50% since the beginning of the year.

DK Chart

Moreover, with negative free cash flow last quarter, the company had to take on additional debt to bolster its cash position and fund its dividend.

Delek’s current annual dividend of $1.24 per share yields about 8.4%. Considering its cash position of $849 million, Delek can cover its dividend (which amounts to $23 million per quarter) and the losses for now. However, with only a short streak of dividend increases, it should surprise few if Delek decides to slash its payout.

ExxonMobil has been well prepared to weather downturns in the past. As a Dividend Aristocrat, it has increased its payout annually for 37 years.

However, even this oil giant could not prepare for the kind of drop in demand it has experienced in 2020. As demand fell through the floor and oil prices briefly dipped into negative territory, losses mounted, and many investors have become concerned about the dividend.

ExxonMobil lost $1.08 billion in its most recent quarter alone. Nonetheless, the company has shown a commitment to maintaining its hard-earned Dividend Aristocrat status. It has borrowed money, sold assets, laid off workers, and even scrapped its 401(k) match for employees.

As matters stand now, ExxonMobil stock trades more than 40% below its 52-week high. Due to this drop in the stock price, the current dividend of $3.48 per share yields about 8%. Also, without an increase in the fourth quarter, ExxonMobil would lose its Dividend Aristocrat status. Hence, investors will likely receive a slight payout hike at that time.

XOM Chart

ExxonMobil Year-to-Date Stock Performance, data by YCharts.

Nonetheless, the dividend payout ratio, or percentage of trailing-12-month net income devoted to the dividend, is now above 200%. Also, due to the company’s negative free cash flow, this situation is not sustainable. If low oil prices and weak demand persist, ExxonMobil may eventually have to reduce its payout.

The pain continues for natural gas company ONEOK. A massive drop in natural gas usage caused ONEOK stock to lose more than 80% of its value at the sell-off’s peak. Despite a slight recovery, ONEOK stock is trading about 60% below its price at the beginning of 2020.

OKE Chart

Oneok Stock Year-to-Date Performance, data by YCharts.

This has taken its $3.74 per share annual dividend to a yield of about 12.6%. Also, while the company is not a Dividend Aristocrat, its dividend has risen steadily over the years. ONEOK has not slashed its payout since 1988.

However, the dividend payout ratio now stands at just under 250%. Moreover, all analyst profit forecasts through 2023 come in well below $3.74 per share.

The latest earnings report showed the extent of the pain. Net income in the second quarter came in at just over $134 million, or $0.32 per diluted share. This missed analyst estimates by $0.21 per share. It is also a 57% reduction from the company’s earnings per share of $0.75 in the same quarter of last year.

Moreover, ONEOK’s $946 million cash hoard will offer little help, as the company has already spent $774 million on dividend payouts in the first half of 2020. CEO Terry Spencer ruled out a dividend cut for now. However, during the company’s recent earnings call, he described a dividend cut as a possible “lever” if “deleveraging expectations are not being met.” ONEOK may have to pull this lever barring a relatively quick recovery in natural gas consumption.

Apps that Facebook copied before taking on TikTok with Reels

Apps that Facebook copied before taking on TikTok with Reels

New Delhi, Aug 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has always believed in a simple formula: If you want to beat your rivals, either acquire them or copy them in such a way that they never recover from it.

While the social network acquired WhatsApp and Instagram in order to “kill” the competition, it copied at least six popular apps before launching a clone called Instagram Reels to crush the Chinese short-video making app TikTok.

In June 2014, Facebook created a standalone app called Slingshot to “stave off the rise of Snapchat”.

The Snapchat users, however, did not switch to Slingshot which was eventually shut down in 2015.

One has to remember that Snap CEO Evan Spiegel famously turned down a $3 billion offer from Facebook to buy his company Snapchat in 2013.

In March 2015, Facebook launched “On This Day” – similar to Timehop which was a rival social media service that had six million daily users at the time Facebook copied it, reports Forbes.

In 2016, unable to crush Snapchat, Facebook launched Instagram Stories, a blatant copy of Snapchat’s flagship feature that lets users post videos and photos that disappear after 24 hours.

Facebook later expanded the copied feature to its main app as well as the Messenger app.

In 2016, Facebook allowed its users to buy and sell goods from other users via Marketplace, “a dedicated tab for peer-to-peer shopping similar to Craigslist”.

Founded in 1995, Craigslist is a US-based classified advertisements website with sections devoted to jobs, housing, for sale, items wanted, services, community service, gigs, resumes and discussion forums.

In April this year, Facebook created a standalone gaming app called Facebook Gaming that aims to take on the popular Twitch which is owned by Amazon.

Twitch is one of the most popular live streaming services in the world with nearly 10 billion hours of video watched in 2019.

Facebook Gaming is now available on Apple App Store after facing initial restriction.

In April again, the social networking giant launched Messenger Rooms, a video chat feature that takes on popular Zoom and Houseparty platforms.

In the next step to integrate its family of apps that are being used by 3.14 billion users globally, Facebook has integrated Messenger rooms with WhatsApp on the Web.

Finally, Facebook launched Instagram Reels this month that takes on its rival in the field of short-video making apps – TikTok.

The move came as TikTok is facing political heat in the US as President Donald Trump has issued an executive order, prohibiting the China-based ByteDance that owns TikTok from doing business with the US firms after 45 days.

Microsoft is now pursuing talks to acquire TikTok’s US business.

Meanwhile, new emails from April 2012 have revealed that worried about being left behind by mobile apps that made quick progress by cloning other services, Zuckerberg asked some of the company’s executives what could the social network do to stay ahead of others.

The email set off a long discussion among Facebook team members on the benefits of copying others like Pinterest instead of spending a lot of time on building new social use cases themselves.

The emails were released as part of a US House Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee probe earlier this month.

An elderly 'Subway Karen' accuses young girl of being a hacker. She was just watching a YouTube …

A video of an older woman accosting a younger woman at a Subway for trying to “hack” her is circulating on social media. The video shows an older woman accusing a younger woman of trying to “hack” into her accounts from her phone when the young woman was supposedly just watching a YouTube video.

The young woman started filming the interaction after the older woman accosted her once. She told a security guard the older woman confronted her and told her she was “an idiot” for being on her phone and “going to jail” for the alleged “hacking.”

“You have no right hacking into my phone,” the older woman says in the video. “I have a nice, big iPhone too. I’m not behind on technology. You need to straighten your act up. Don’t come in and try to hack for things, for one thing, and you couldn’t get my account young lady.”

A Subway employee tells the young woman the older woman is “always like that,” insinuating they’ve had problems with her before.

The young woman who was accused of hacking tries to de-escalate the situation by saying “it’s fine.” But when the security guard escorts the older woman out, she claims she was being “targeted.”

The older woman left Subway after that confrontation.

The video circulated heavily on Reddit, with commenters weighing in on the situation.

“Imagine coming up to a random a** person trying to eat their foot-long and you say ‘YOU’RE HACKING!’ I have no words right now…” one Reddit user said.

But some users worried the older woman had dementia because of her age and “paranoia.”

“I’ve had two relatives go through Alzheimer’s and they can get downright nasty when they’re having one of their persecution episodes. They’re basically prisoners to these delusions induced by their own powerlessness over the disease,” another redditor said. “My guess is this lady probably has no one to take care of her, possibly no official treatment/diagnosis, or she can’t afford to be dependent on someone else.”

“This poor woman has dementia,” another added. “She is confused and paranoid and probably saw something on TV about hacking [… Let’s] not confuse being a jerk Karen with someone with dementia.”

Many who think the woman is suffering from mental health issues had a problem that she was considered a “Karen” to begin with.

“It’s become so annoying that [every] woman is now a Karen. It used to mean the entitled ‘can I speak to your manager’ types. Not meth heads and the mentally ill,” one user said.

Although many viewers thought the elderly woman might have dementia, it is impossible to tell from a video. You can watch the full video here.

Instagram page shares stories of antisemitism on campus

Instagram page shares stories of antisemitism on campus

A new Instagram account has begun collecting anonymous stories of experiences of antisemitism on campuses across the US in order to “provide a safe space” for Jewish students to speak up against antisemitism on campus.

The Jewish on Campus page has gained over 13,000 followers, and more than 130 stories have been posted since it opened in early July.
The page was made to “provide a safe space for Jews of all backgrounds to speak up against antisemitism on college campuses,” according to The Jewish News of North Carolina.

“My hope is to make more students heard on campus,” Zohar Levy, a student at Stanford University and outreach coordinator for Jewish on Campus told The Jewish News. “We are here to tell a story.”
About 800 stories have been submitted, although not all have been published, with submissions coming from hundreds of universities including Columbia, Brandeis, Harvard and University of California Berkeley.
Stories can be submitted by filling out a Google form with a description of the incident, the name of the college or university and whether the institution or university responded. No one involved in the incident or in reporting the incident are named.
Some 17 student volunteers fact check and vet the stories before they’re posted, according to The Jewish News.
Jewish on Campus describes itself as a “bipartisan Zionist group” and also posts about Zionism and other topics. The group also hosts the Zionist on Campus Instagram page with educational posts about Israel.
Levy told The Jewish News that she has experienced and seen antisemitism at Stanford, including the discovery last month of swastikas drawn in a hallway of the on-campus Memorial Church. Levy also works to contact Jewish organizations to ask them to share posts from the Instagram page.
Isaac de Castro, a student at Cornell University, started the page. “Jewish college students, we should make one of those accounts where we post all the antisemitic s&%$ we’ve encountered anonymously,” tweeted de Castro on July 6, following up later inviting people to follow the page.
Julia Jassey, one of seven student leaders running the page and a student at the University of Chicago, told The Jewish News that they’re considering applying for nonprofit status to turn Jewish on Campus into a more expansive organization to “defend Jewish students whose voices aren’t being heard.”
The group has also made a new blog on Medium where students can write about broader topics, such as sexual assault or Zionism. Both anonymous and non-anonymous essays are being accepted.
Some fellow students of Jassey’s have criticized the idea, saying that those who write to the page are “just white people complaining.” Comments on a post about British rapper Wiley, who recently posted antisemitic comments, include “Destroy Israel” and “Jews are not oppressed y’all got reparations so long ago keep it pushing please.”
“It just comes with the job,” said Jassey in response. “We want to be loud and proud of our Jewish pride movement.”

Yahoo Finance stock historical price query

I’ve been trying to track my porfolio’s progress manually by downloading historical stock prices for the duration that I own them.

It seemed to be easier to download stock price for single stock if I happen to own them for a particular date.

I think I got things to work mostly but when it comes to netflix stocks, it won’t retrieve the data.

For example:

[temp, status] = urlread([‘https://query1.finance.yahoo.com/v7/finance/download/GOOG?’…

‘post’,{‘matlabstockdata@yahoo.com’, ‘historical stocks’},’Timeout’,10);

works great but

[temp, status] = urlread([‘https://query1.finance.yahoo.com/v7/finance/download/NFLX?’…

‘post’,{‘matlabstockdata@yahoo.com’, ‘historical stocks’},’Timeout’,10);

does not work.

How can I make this work?

BILL OWNEY | POWER WAGON: The king of the big boys' toys

The 2500 Heavy Duty Ram Power Wagon is shown. (Photo courtesy of Fiat Chyrsler Automobiles)

DALLAS — I was scratching out a living by selling cars at a Dodge shop in Dallas back in the early ’80s when the boss sent a couple of us across the Metroplex to pick up a used Power Wagon.

I didn’t know what that was, but the reverence in his voice when he said “Power Wagon” intrigued me. Plus, it was a slow day and at least I got lunch out of the deal.

When we got to the Fort Worth dealership, my partner took one look at the giant, shiny, red monstrosity and immediately let me know that he had no idea what all those gear shift levers meant and that even if he did, there was no way in God’s Creation that he was driving that thing through the Mixmaster at rush hour. I would have to pilot its return trip.

I grinned from ear to ear.

There she was, the only girlfriend I ever had in the Army, all dressed up and ready to play. Take off those shiny bumpers, take out the radio and the heating and cooling system and it was just another T137, a three-quarter-ton, cook on the fender, sleep on the tailgate, climb ev’ry mountain, ford every stream, search high and low, U.S. Army reconnaissance vehicle.

What? You thought Army Intelligence moved around in black Suburbans? Only in the movies. In the 82nd Airborne, S2 lives a lot closer to the ground.

One could also find this truck living as an ambulance, a troop hauler, a communications vehicle, a repair vehicle, or just a plain ole truck. When Dodge first started painting them any color other than olive drab in 1946, they were the first civilian vehicle with four-wheel-drive. They were also first to offer power take-off, driving everything from post-hole diggers to beefy winches.

Not beefy wenches, for you guys who went to Germany. This is a different thing.

The point of all this is that when the nice lady sent an email saying she was sending out a 2020 RAM Power Wagon, I was curious to see how time had treated the old girl.

Then I saw her. O.M.G!

Please don’t tell Beautiful Blonde I am having these thoughts about a truck. On second thought, go ahead. Against her better judgment, she’s grown accustomed to my perversions.

First, it rides better

There are reasons why RAM trucks are the reigning, back-to-back Motor Trend Trucks of the Year, and why the heavy-duty version was named among the 100 Greatest Innovations of 2019 by Popular Science.

It rides well. Ford and Chevy continue to support the rear ends of their trucks with leaf springs, which, to be fair, was itself a stunning innovation when applied to Egyptian catapults in the 4th century BC. The technology is useful because it spreads weight load across a wide area of a frame. The downside is that the whole darn truck bounces on everything but the smoothest of surfaces.

Ram trucks use multi-link coil springs over the rear wheels, which give them a car-like ride. It’s like the difference between kneeling at the river and cleaning your jeans by pounding them on rocks and tossing them in a machine and watching a movie.

So, why, in their last two pickup redesigns, did Chevy and Ford continue to use leaf springs in the rear? It’s because the conventional wisdom holds that that’s what customers want. Leaf springs result in a greater payload (what goes in the bed) and towing capacities. A RAM 1500 has a payload of 2,300 lbs and can tow 12,750 lbs. An F-150 can carry 3,270 lbs. and tow 13,200 lbs.

How many folks do you reckon will ever come close to the max work capacity of their trucks, or can even tell you the average weight of a bass boat and trailer (about 2,400 lbs) or an average utility trailer (about 100 lbs. per foot). For that matter, how many Ford and Chevy owners do you reckon have even driven a Ram?

“I’ve driven a Ford for 40 years. I love the way it rides. I don’t need to drive something else,” says my brother-in-law without a hint of irony.

I see a lot of hard-working trucks around town, but I see even more air-hauling. The church parking lot is filled with shiny, clean, and empty trucks. Still, folks buy those numbers, that’s what you learn on a car lot.

Second, it loves to play

No one will argue that the Power Wagon is the most capable off-road truck on the road. It’s not as spry or as much fun as the lighter-weight Ford Raptor or Dodge Rebel, but if this thing can’t handle a trail, you’re going to have to custom-build something that will.

Or get something smaller. This 7,000-lb behemoth with a 149.3-inch wheelbase is about the size of two Jeep Wranglers. It has taller springs than a Regular RAM HD, plus chunky, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires, giving it a total ground clearance of 14.2 inches.

With live axles front and rear, with 4.10:1 differentials and a 2.64:1 low range setting, the latest iteration Power Wagon can crawl up a steep grade better than my old girlfriend (and, Lord, did I put her through a lot). The rear axle is muscled up with an 11.5-inch ring gear and thicker axles for enhanced durability.

It has electronically disconnecting roll bars front and rear plus an extra joint in the front suspension that RAM calls Articulink. The Power Wagon has 26 inches of front wheel articulation, which is more than some competition rigs.

If all that won’t get you over the river and through the woods, a standard, 12,000-lb Warn winch will.

Finally, she’s a looker

Externally, the power wagon looks like a weight lifter on wheels. Inside, she reminds everyone she’s now a RAM, meaning she has one of the prettiest cabins on the planet.

Rear seats are a little flat, but the front seats are strong,  plush, something a sea captain would enjoy. Though she’s filled with tons of technology. Switches and gauges are intelligently laid out, easy to read and use.

Our tester, which started at $53,250 but was loaded up to $69,890, was as filled with gadgetry as the neighborhood Best Buy. Safety technology, like dynamic cruise control, was abundant. The sound system and phone integration worked flawlessly. A huge, 12-inch infotainment screen was pleasant to behold and easy to use. Heated front and rear seats and a surround-view camera system made parking and trailering a breeze.

And there was something I’d never experienced in a Power Wagon: A quiet interior. She seems settled, mature. I guess if people can move on, so can trucks.

Ply her with gas

Powered by the RAM HD’s standard 6.4-L Hemi V-8, the Power Wagon can get into freeway traffic with ease, thanks to 410 horses and 429 lb.-ft. of torque. Still, she’s a gas hog. We got around 12 mpg in combined driving for the week, and less than 8 mpg while hauling a trailer.

Not available on the Power Wagon is RAM’s unrivaled diesel, a $9,100 Cummins turbodiesel than can twist out 1,000 pounds of torque and tow up to 35,100 pounds in a properly equipped RAM 3500.

That’s an engine built for serious work. The Power Wagon, on the other hand, is the most serious plaything you can buy in a showroom.

If you buy one, tell her I miss her more than ever.
